This fifth-generation 2017 Subaru Outback was lauded for its all-wheel drive capability, passenger capacity, capacious cargo space, easy-to-use multimedia system and famed safety and reliability. The midsize crossover offers standard features like symmetrical all-wheel drive, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control and X-mode, which makes it the ideal family vehicle.

Before selecting their winners, U.S. News & World Report examined and assessed more than 200 new cars, minivans and SUVs. Editors take into account a variety of professional reviews, reliability and safety ratings, seating space, cargo volume and the availability of family-friendly features. The vehicle that earned the highest total score in each award category was declared the class winner.
