Overview of the Operation of a Timing Belt

The timing belt is a key component of your car's engine. The timing belt serves the primary purpose of effecting the proper rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft in your vehicle. Some engines have multiple camshafts, all of which are driven by a singular crankshaft via a timing belt.

The proper rotation of the crankshaft with the camshaft ensures that your engine's valves open and close as needed during the intake and exhaust strokes. This rotation is accomplished in part due to the teeth that are found on the inner side of a timing belt.

If you've heard the phrase "your car's timing is off," reference is likely being made to the timing belt. If you think you are having an issue with your vehicle's timing belt, come see us in our service center at Giles Automotive. Our team can take a look at your engine and see if it is time to replace your timing belt.
